Saint Catherine’s Monastery

After breakfast, you will head to St. Catherine’s Monastery, one of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries in the world, dating back to the 6th century AD. The monastery was named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, who was tortured and martyred for her devotion to the Christian faith. Inside the monastery, your journey will begin to explore its most important historical and religious landmarks:

Church of the Transfiguration

The main church inside Saint Catherine’s Monastery and one of the most remarkable Byzantine churches in the world. It was built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD and is famous for its rare Mosaic of the Transfiguration and its ancient icons of great historical and religious significance.

The Sacred Burning Bush

Also known as the Burning Bush, it is connected to the religious story of Prophet Moses, where it is believed that the divine call was revealed to him. Beside it stands a small chapel believed to have been built during the reign of Empress Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine.

Moses Well

An ancient natural well associated with the story of Prophet Moses during his time in Sinai. It remains one of the traditional landmarks linked to the region’s history.

Saint Catherine’s Monastery Library

One of the most important Christian libraries in the world, housing more than 6,000 rare manuscripts. It is often described as second only to the Vatican Library in terms of the value of its ancient Christian manuscripts.

The Fatimid Mosque Inside the Monastery

A historic mosque located within the monastery walls. It is believed that it was not regularly used for prayers due to the inaccurate direction of the qibla.
