Saint Anthony Monastery
Monastery of Saint Anthony is considered one of the oldest Coptic Orthodox monasteries in the world. It is located within an oasis in the Eastern Desert near the Red Sea Mountains, south of Suez and about 334 km from Cairo.
The monastery is dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great, the first Christian monk and the founder of Christian monasticism. It was established by his disciples near the cave where he lived high on the mountain overlooking the monastery.
During your visit, you will discover historic churches, ancient passageways, and distinctive Coptic murals that reflect the rich history of monastic life in Egypt.
Saint Paul Monastery
Monastery of Saint Paul the Anchorite, also known as the Monastery of Saint Paul the Hermit, is considered one of the oldest Coptic monasteries in Egypt. It is located in the Eastern Desert near the Red Sea Mountains, close to the city of Zaafarana southeast of Cairo.
The monastery began as a group of caves and monks’ dwellings surrounding the place where Saint Paul the Hermit, regarded as the first Christian hermit, lived. The Church of Saint Paul is considered the heart of the monastery, as it was built inside and around his cave. The church contains altars, icons, religious murals, and hanging ostrich eggs symbolizing resurrection and spiritual vigilance.
The monastery also includes a historic fortress that was used by monks for protection during raids, and it belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.
