Explore Shali Fortress: A Historical Gem in Siwa Oasis
After breakfast we head to nestled atop a hill within a fortified enclosure, Shali Fortress 360 stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Siwa Oasis community. Originally accessible through a single gate, this intricate labyrinth of mud-brick structures has sheltered the oasis inhabitants for nearly eight centuries. Residents once lived in close quarters, sharing space with their livestock, which were corralled into the fortress each night. Notably, the construction of the fortress incorporated large blocks of salt—abundant in the Siwa Oasis—which were instrumental in fortifying its walls. However, despite its sturdy design, rain has posed a greater threat to the fortress than any human adversary. Built in the 13th century, Shali Fortress was the heartbeat of Siwan life for over 800 years. Today, its mosque is still active, and many of the homes have been restored, with some transformed into charming guesthouses.
Discover the Mountain of the Dead
Just over a kilometer north of Shali lies the intriguing Mountain of the Dead, a conical peak housing tombs from the 26th Dynasty, as well as the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Gebel Al-Mawta boasts four noteworthy tombs, with the Tomb of Si Amun being the most exquisite in the Siwa Oasis. Si Amun, believed to be a wealthy Egyptian of possibly Greek descent, embraced ancient Egyptian beliefs. His tomb is adorned with depictions from the Egyptian pantheon, including a stunning portrayal of the goddess Nut beside a sycamore tree.
Unwind at Ali Khaled Camp
For those seeking relaxation, Ali Khaled Camp, also known as Mountain Camp, offers a serene retreat at the base of Dakrur Mountain amidst lush palm groves. Visitors can unwind in a garden furnished with hammocks, daybeds, and even a treehouse. The camp also features a hot spring and a freshwater plunge pool, allowing guests to alternate between lounging in the shaded oasis and enjoying the refreshing waters. For the adventurous spirit, a hike up Dakrur Mountain presents an opportunity to experience its renowned healing sand baths and witness breathtaking sunsets over Siwa town.
